Geography

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) consists of (1) the four island groups/states represented by -Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, and (2) the million plus square miles of ocean surrounding the islands.

The FSM's total land area amounts to only 271 square miles extending 1,700 miles from west (Yap) to east (Kosrae). The 133 square mile island of Pohnpei is the largest in the FSM and home of the country's capital, Palikir. FSM emerged as a nation in 1984 from the former United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI). The FSM is currently in a political treaty with the United States called the Compact of Free Association .

As in most developing countries in the Pacific, population is growing rapidly, averaging 3 percent annually. However, with easy emigration to the United States, about 2 percent of the population leaves for the US, reducing the effective population growth rate to one percent.
