KOSRAE

Beautiful, gentle Kosrae is the undiscovered Micronesia - still unknown to the commercial world of general tourism. Divers are more likely todiscover this gem before it becomes a sightseeing destination.

Kosrae is an exceptionally beautiful island, with a high mountain ridge that rises 2,000 feet above sea level. The flanks of this ridge are covered by a dense tropical forest where edible fruits often grow wild.

Kosrae's greatest attraction is the clear, clean ocean and living coral reefs that completely encircle it. The island is somewhat triangular in shape and good dive sites can be found on all three sides. Underwater visibility averages 100 feet or better. During the month of August, visibility can often reach up to 200 feet!

The reefs are populated with all kinds of exotic marine invertebrates such as carpet anemones, crinoids of every conceivable color and all kinds of shrimp, crabs, nudibranchs and starfish. A diver could probably observe 30 to 50 different species on a single dive.

Kosrae also has a large population of turtles and during the December mating season their numbers seem to grow into the thousands.

There is also a resident school of 150 dolphins that cruise the blue water outside the barrier reef.

The people of this island are very friendly and courteous. It is a great spot for those seeking an offbeat vacation experience.
